Just when you think you’d settled into a nice routine when it comes to public speaking…BAM, someone throws you a curve ball.

I recently agreed to take part in the Lord’s Taverners charity balloon debate on May 9 at New Dock Hall. Simple task – talk about your sporting hero and try not to get kicked out the metaphorical balloon for being boring.

What I didn’t realise was that I’d be up against the great and the good of sporting excellence- two multi-capped football internationals (Mark Lawrenson and Danny Mills) and an Olympian (Gail Emms), who I believe is a Spurs fan.

As I type I’m still not sure what ‘sporting hero’ I should discuss. I doubt anyone will want to hear about any of West Ham’s great players. Ah, not to worry still plenty of time to think of something…gulp!
